Let's Play: Name That Apple!
« on: May 25, 2005, 02:45:51 PM »

A name has been chosen! The new Apple 17" PowerBook G4 will be known as MIRANDA. Thank you to all those who voted. Pictures of the system and its specs will be posted at a later date.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

As most know, I am trying to come up with a name for my new Apple PowerBook. The name will be used on my local network to help simplify things for me, and also, it will be used as a sort of keyword to get the system's "attention." A neat feature in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is that you can setup VoiceOver. VoiceOver is built right into the OS and integrates itself easily with ANY program for the mac. Or, use VoiceOver's other auidabule features, such as pressing a key and giving the system voice commands, or saying a keyword to get the systems attention and then give voice commands. So here again, the name will be used on the local network and as a keyword for VoiceOver.

Here are some options with their related pro/con meanings:

1. Gizmo

Pro's
+Has the meaning of "device that is very useful for a particular job."
+Also the name of everyone's favorite grimlin.
Con's
-Has the meaning of "A mechanical device or part whose name is forgotten or unknown." In my opinion...Apple will never be forgotten! (though its not leaving anytime soon, get ready for a battle Microsoft!!) Nor will it ever go unknown!

2. Miranda

Pro's
+Sounds neat...rather like a (beg your pardon) sexy model's name, lol.
+It closely relates to technology because it is a (rather old) programming language developed in the early 1980's by David Turner at University of Kent.
+Formerly once used (the programming language that is) on Intel and IBM systems. As some of you may know, Apple's provider of processors is (in my opinion, regretably) IBM. However, since it relates, its a pro!
+Meaning of the name is "extraordinary, to be admired."
Con's
-Umm, none that I can think of...
Misc
>Has the meaning of "of, relating to, or being one's Miranda rights." Sort of a good thing, but, this is more of a political/legal term which has nothing to do with technology.

3. Nova

Pro's
+Has the meaning of "a star that ejects some of its material in the form of a cloud and become more luminous in the process." Think of the 'ejecting material' as the final products produced on a mac/by a mac - a beautiful thing.
+Relates to the stars, every star shines brightly, just as Apple and their new OS shine brightly. Also realted to the saying "reach for the stars."
+Relates to technology because Nova was the name of a former 15-bit (micro-)processor. The processor was introduced in 1969 by Data General. Another processor was produced based on the Nova design, known as Pace, a 16-bit processor.
Con's
-Has the meaning of "A star that suddenly becomes much brighter and then gradually returns to its original brightness over a period of weeks to years."
