I tried the new iTunes on Windows, haven't had much time to play with it other then add a bunch of the podcasts I listen to that weren't in the Apple directory.  First impressions though, I'll probably stick with using iPodder for Windows.  One thing I noticed right off, you cannot minimize iTunes to the system tray.

I prefer iTunes... but there are other programs out there.
iTunes lets you skip around within a podcast using 'chapters' and shows what playing in the podcast right now with a visual icon in the lower left hand corner. And a bunch of other neat stuff too.

Abt the minimizing to the system tray, well I can't help that, but WMP doesn't do that either...lol. I'm not sure about other players. But if you have a mac, you can turn on iTunes and close the window (iTunes still runs in the background, playing whatever you selected) -- won't have that problem then, lol.

Apple lists podcast that people submit to them, so encourage your podcast producer to list, list, list! It's real easy.
